Summer Allegory by Lisa Axiotis

Features

ARTIST NOTES: An allegorical painting, Summer draws on the female form to embody the passage of time and the passing of the seasons. Like her namesake, she is fresh, free and fiery in her youth. Painted on a clear substrate and backed with fabric evoking the colours and moods of the season itself, Summer is the culmination of the many ideas and experimentations I have carried out in regard to support and media. The painting, on a clear surface, is offset from the background so as imbue a sense of parallax. This depth allows the viewer’s vantage point to alter what is seen, thereby making an inherently flat and 2D medium interactive. In the sense that she floats above the surface of the background, and casts her shadow in a way that is entirely dependent on the light source, Summer asks the viewer to use the space both inside and outside the painting. Above all, Summer expresses many of the precepts to which I hold fast; sustainable existence, appreciation of beauty, creativity in experimentation and integrity of skill.

ARTIST BIO

Lisa Axiotis is an emerging Melbourne-born multidisciplinary artist. With a background in painting and a Bachelor's Degree in Digital Arts, Lisa's experience in both worlds has filtered through to her current practice: Lisa paints the physical world so as to reflect not only its current state, but its possibilities.

Drawing on classical ideals of beauty, nature and the sublime, Lisa holds fast to what she believes should be inherent in all art - integrity of skill. Hyper-real in execution and seductive in their depth, Lisa's paintings share her vision of reality; often marked by strong focal values and intensity of colour. Her work is natural and exuberant, both feminine and strong - aspects often considered mutually exclusive, to which her practice defies.

Working in a range of media including acrylic, pastel, pencil and cut paper, Lisa's meticulously detailed work has been exhibited nationally and is housed in private collections across Australia.

"To nature I attribute all my findings in expressions of artistic merit."
